Last month I experienced my first Community service in
Singapore. For a scholar who came from China and has rarely got such an opportunity,
I did my best and helped the class to put up an excellent show for the old
folks in the All Saints Home.
Generally speaking the project was well done. There are
various programs covering a large spectrum including a lot of different music
performances. I think next time we will try to make the programs even better by
spending more time on them.
It is not only the unique experience that excited me, but
also the knowledge that I gain from it. It’s not something that solid like
science or language, but more intellectual, deeper in heart. Some says that
next time we shouldn’t add so much “art” flavor since the old folks are either
too silly to comprehend, or too noisy to keep the program going. But I reject
this. Yes,they didn’t clapped their hands, Yes, they didn’t show their
patience. However, deep in their soul, they can feel it, they will enjoy
it------and isn’t that make all the point which make us standing in front of
them?
Life is precious. And somehow, you can increase its value by
helping others to enjoy their lives better. The project benefits me a lot. From
the preparing stage, I learnt how to collaborate and plan and design and so on.
By putting our work up stage, I learnt how to empathize, how to make a
conversation that can never translated Into language, but something more.
